Okay, it’s a fortune cookie, but still… Am feeling a little less crazy for now, calmer, settling into this distribution business. Talked with a lot of people this week, sent screeners to various folks who might be helpful, decided that I’ll go to the American Film Market in November.
Have been doing inner work, too. The main task is to keep an open spirit and not put up my own roadblocks. It’s clear that this is going to be an interesting and jagged path, and I don’t want to sabotage myself with inner messages about how this marketing thing isn’t my cup of tea. So I’m transforming it into my cup of tea, learning to savor the sips.
My friend who was going to help me out a little got a fulltime job so has to bow out. But I had another conversation with another friend, and it looks as if she’s ready to step in and help me with some of the research I have to do – basically, finding out what distribution companies have distributed films similar to mine, which other film festivals might be the best to apply to, who might be the best people to talk to within organizations that might be supportive for a film like this, what the best ways might be to reach the people we think of as our target audience. Lots of threads.
Right now, I’m going up to Taos for a week to teach at the Taos Writing Retreat for Health Professionals, an annual retreat that I created with my colleague, David Morris, twelve years ago. It’s a lot of work, but also really satisfying and enjoyable. We take over the Mabel Dodge Luhan house with sixteen writers from all over the country and generally have a good time. Plus the food is incredible. For a week, I’ll probably forget I ever made a movie, and then come back refreshed.
